Advanced Jerkbait Tips to Locate Prespawn Smallmouth

There's no doubt jerkbaits and prespawn bass go hand in hand. As the spawn starts to get going, locating areas of the lake that is behind the rest of the lake can still produce awesome prespawn bites. Often the biggest bass in the lake.

Not all jerkbaits are created equal and some shine when others don't. Smallmouth bass that are staging are often located around quick drops that lead into their spawning habitat. Utilizing the NEW Shimano Zumverno 115 jerkbait, I can hit depths deeper than I can with other jerkbaits, allowing me to deflect the bait of rocks and drops to entice them big females to bite up before committing to the spawn.

Packed with features like Jet Boost allows me to throw this plug further and more accurately than any other jerkbait Iv'e thrown and the Flash Boost technology gets bit on the stop even in the clearest glacial water.

I have no problem with targeting spawning bass but definitely prefer to chase prespawners as long as I can until I start catching postspawn bass on their way back out.

My full setup for throwing the Shimano Zumverno is the New G Loomis GLX 822 JBR, designed exclusively for jerkbaits with it's shortened handle, fast tip and plenty of backbone in the mid section of the rod to handle these big northern smallmouth. I'm utilizing the Shimano Metanium DC 70 to help improve casting distance even in the hardest of winds and 10lb Shimano Mastiff fluorocarbon to assist my jerkbait in hitting that 7-10 foot range.
